Class 5 have been working on batik designs inspired by the Ancient Maya for their fabric work. First, they traced an image onto fabric from a template or their own design before going over the pattern outlines with glue. The next step will be to add colour using fabric paint before we see the end result!

On Friday 26th March, Class 5 spent the day taking part in a virtual Geography field trip to Plymouth.

We talked about many things including: land-use; green spaces; what influence the university has had on the city and steps that have been taken to make Plymouth an attractive place to visit. Using Google maps, virtual video clips and a detailed map of the city,  pupils navigated between different locations and recorded points of interest onto a map of Plymouth. They then worked in groups to carry out research on different landmarks which they presented to the class before finishing the afternoon with ice-cream!

Class 5 have had a busy few weeks. In art they enjoyed using acrylic paints to create textured cityscapes, which were inspired by the artist Leonid Afremov. The end result was fantastic!

St Piran’s Day celebrations.

Lots of children in Class 5 have enjoyed making pasties at home or at school as part of our DT project. We looked at the history of the Cornish pasty; the journey of one of the ingredients from field to fork; food miles and considered what makes a good pasty before making them. I’m sure they were all very tasty!

Potato characters for World Book Day.
Class 5 have been making stop motion animations over the past 5 weeks. They started by creating story-boards before making 2D animations. They then went on to create characters, props and backgrounds to record a 3D animation.

Class 5 used oil pastels to create these beautiful pictures of the Northern Lights. They looked at some examples first and experimented with the pastels, creating small swatches. Following this they learnt the techniques a step at a time. They were really pleased with the results.

In Literacy, we are going to be writing our own explanations based on Wallace and Gromit’s Cracking Contraptions- Class 5 enjoyed watching some short clips of the contraptions in action! We have looked at the structural and language features of explanation writing and will be producing a blueprint of our machine designs before writing our final explanation text over the next 2 weeks.

Today in PSHE we discussed racism and what it means. The children designed a ribbon that shows that we need to fight racism.
This week Class 5 have been making Orrey’s to track the movements of the planets.
